This is really good!

Mind if I ask 3 Questions---
1- What was the size of this picture when you drew it?
2- What exactly was "cropped" off this picture (or were you using that term some other way?)
3- How did you do the shading? I see mixes between what look like gradients and regular transitions, but I was wondering if you could clarify for me.

Thanks so much for the comment. I'm happy to answer your questions.
The picture is on a letter-size paper (8.5x11"), the un-cropped version you can see in my gallery: [link]
I drew the lines with a 0.5mm pencil, then scanned in the picture and shaded it in Photoshop. So, it's kind of a mixed-media of traditional and computer art.
Any other questions, feel free to ask.

^^ You're welcome and thanks for answering...

You drew THAT on an 8.5x11" piece of paper!? That's amazing!!

And thanks for all the other information too. I tend to use 0.7mm when I draw, and I use photoshop elements 6 to add any color and shading to my pics.

I'll let you know if I have any other questions, thanks again.

Thank you so much for the nice comment!
Yes, i draw these figures with pencil, they all started as 2-5-10 minute sketches, just capturing the gesture, the space and the proportion of the body. Then i take the very rough sketch and start analyzing it, breaking it through all kinds of shapes. Then i scan in the drawing and apply the shadows, highlights and gradients in Photoshop. But it ALWAYS starts with pencil. I LOVE drawing with a single, thin pencil! :-)

ah..of course . You've done a lot of life drawing , yeah ? - and the way you break them down is like a biomech engineer's plan . They work in many levels though - that's just one of them . 'love your pencil work a lot , and , I think you're a superb painter .:)

Yes, I did lots of life drawing in college. Went to art school and drawing well was mandatory, which is understandable since that's the base of all visual arts (from realistic portrait painting to hard-core conceptual or abstract). Drawing is like writing, whatever you put down on the paper has information and meaning. It's good to be in control of the lines, otherwise it's hard to achieve the same results. Like speaking a language, if you don't know it well, people don't understand or misunderstand you. In terms of painting, I never had enough time to develop and finesse my "style", these portraits are more just studies. But I really appreciate your kind words. :blowkiss:

Thank you . I relate to your rationale well ,
drawing is also the base for sculpting . Lines
inform us of the form , and through it can be read
also the artist's temperaments . If one should loosen
enough , .. rendering could be as fluid as calligraphy .
I think there's enough finesse in your paintings that
warrants you further developments . But as they are ,
I think you have a supreme discipline I've not seen
for awhile . :)
